Waterwise Garden Competition — September 2003

This year's Waterwise Garden Competition was a great success with 29 entries. This year's competition particularly focussed on waterwise gardens and the overall appearance, colour and tidiness of gardens and verges.

Landcare Officer, Kylie Payne said she was particularly impressed with the gardens with Goldfields native plants, mulch and weed free verges. Travelling around and judging the gardens we were able to see that many Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents are making an effort to have gardens which are suitable to our semi-arid climatic conditions but also attractive, well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing. It was great to see that a number of residents are also maintaining their verges and reducing or removing altogether high water use lawns and gardens.

The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group wishes to thank all the entrants for participating in the Waterwise Garden Competition and all the sponsors for making the competition possible.

Annual Community Tree Planting Day — Saturday 19 July 2003

The Gribble Creek floodplain was the site for this year's Community Tree Planting Day. Individuals and teams participated in what turned out to be an extremely successful day with over 2500 trees being planted.

Native Plant Guide Launch at Karlkurla Park

KBULG’s Native Plant Guide was officially launched at Kalkurla Park on Friday, 30th May. The MC of the event was Brad Gordon, Deputy Chairman of KBULG, and guest speakers included John Colwill, ABC Weatherman and gardening expert, who officially launched the book; Doug Krepp, an important figure in the history of both the park and the Native Plant Guide; and Kylie Payne, the compiler of the Guide.

The Native Plant Guide, which was funded by the Natural Heritage Trust, describes more than 60 Kalgoorlie-Boulder trees, flowering shrubs, and everlastings. Each entry gives the plant's common, scientific, and aboriginal names; a description of the plant including its leaves, fruits, and flowers; a dial showing flowering times; a map showing where it can be found; interesting facts and uses of the plant; and a photograph of the plant.

The Native Plant Guide is available from the Landcare Office and from the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Visitor Centre. It costs $15 for the book by itself, or $22 for the book with accompanying CD-ROM.

KBULG WINNER INAUGURAL KLEENHEAT GAS COMMUNITY OF THE YEAR AWARD

KBULG was the winner of the inaugural regional Community of the Year Award held in Bunbury in November.

The Award recognised a specific community, project, group, organisation, city or local government initiative, which displayed exceptional achievement and has made a contribution to their local community. The organisation needed to present a significant positive image in their area and be an outstanding role model to the wider Western Australian community.

St Barbara's Festival Parade — December

KBULG participated in the annual St Barbara's Festival Parade with Junior Landcare students carrying placades with environmental messages and walking alongside the KBULG sponsored ute. KBULG joined many other mining and commmunity floats in the parade down Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie.

FINALIST BURKE'S BACKYARD ENVIRO BLITZ

KBULG was one of 15 finalists out of about 300 entries in a LANDCARE ENVIRONMENTAL RESCUE PROGRAM. The idea was to pick a really degraded site that is in need of environmental rescue, send in photos and an application form and Landcare Australia picked one site across Australia and will give the community up to $75,000 to do the landcare work to rescue the site.

The site KBULG chose with assistance from the community and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder was the Dwyer St Dam. The winning site was Phillip Island in Victoria.
